Binge drink warning to women
BINGE drinking may cause more severe liver damage in women than in men, researchers warn.
Scientists who gave rats alcohol found females had nearly four times more fatty build-up in the liver, damaging the organ.
And a certain protein, DGKa, which increased by a fifth in male rats, nearly doubled in females. Professor Shivendra Shukla, of the University of Missouri School of Medicine in the US, said: “DGKa has been shown in other studies to promote tumour growth and cancer.”
He said more research was needed in humans, but added: “Don’t binge drink. The research is very clear.”
