Jo shows we can’t trust the Lib Dems

-

■ For someone who has just recently been elected leader of her party, Jo Swinson has an awful lot to learn.

She stood on a platform of stopping Brexit at all costs, and now with a golden opportunity to try to do just that she has thumbed her nose at Jeremy Corbyn.

MPs from all parties have said they will meet Mr Corbyn after he put forward his idea for a cross-party interim government to stop a catastrophic no-deal, yet she said no.

I think all she has done is cut off the re-emergence of the Lib Dems as a political force and made us wonder how we could ever trust a party that was part of such a destructive coalition with the Conservatives.

They broke promises then and it looks like their words are just as hollow now.

Mary Pester, Saltash, Cornwall

■ Jeremy Corbyn and Jo Swinson need to compromise for the sake of the country.

Ms Swinson needs to accept that the leader of any interim government has to come from the Labour Party as the official opposition. And Mr Corbyn needs to be prepared to sacrifice his personal ambition and concede leadership to a less divisive figure. Johnson’s no-deal Brexit can only be stopped if all the MPs who oppose it stop playing petty politics and co-operate.

■ Just when some people were beginning to think the Lib Dems were growing into a credible opposition force, their leader does something stupid.

Jeremy Corbyn formulated a plan to ensure the UK doesn’t crash out of the EU without a deal and along comes Jo Swinson to help the Tories by blocking Corbyn’s proposal.

The only mystery is why the Lib Dems use yellow as their party colour instead of light blue, which would help everyone to know who they are and what they stand for! Clive Osman, Nuneaton, Warks

■ Jeremy Corbyn should realise how unpopular he is and stand aside. Some of us remember the strikes of the past that tore families and communities apart and his ideas go back to this era. Also, Corbyn will jump on any bandwagon to try to get into Number 10 – he

comes across as desperate. A coalition government is a good idea, but perhaps people should vote for its leader. MPs on all sides need to make a decision. Mary Taylor, Fairburn, West Yorks

■ Practically every expert and think tank warns of Armageddon if we crash out of the EU with no deal.

However, across the board scheming politicians are vying for power themselves, as usual.

Bill Cook, Teignmouth, Devon

■ Of course Jo Swinson won’t support Corbyn as an interim PM. Didn’t her party spend five years in bed with the Conservatives doing their bit to damage this country? You simply cannot trust them. Alan Baber, Bideford, North Devon

■ The Liberal Democrats are anything but democrats. They are the most undemocratic political party of the lot in the UK, along with the SNP.

Neither will accept the democratic wishes of the people. Why should the electorate even consider voting for one of these parties that refuse to carry out the wishes of the people? They should be removed from the political map at the next election as they can’t be trusted.
