Cocky Cameron’s biggest disgrace

- Edited by

■ In his very timely memoirs, David Cameron rightly criticises the downright lies put about by Boris Johnson and Michael Gove in the Leave campaign (Mirror, September 16).

But in the same breath he also says he has no regrets about calling the referendum in the first place.

This clearly demonstrates that, even after all this time and considering the political and constitutional crisis the country now finds itself in, the meaning of the word “humility” still escapes the lips of this arrogant old Etonian.

■ David Cameron promised the Tory faithful a referendum on our EU membership because of the threat from Nigel Farage’s UKIP. As we now know from Cameron’s memoirs, most politicians didn’t give Leave a chance of winning. It did and he jumped ship. Three years later, we are far from returning to the days when Britain was “Great” and even modestly bad forecasts put us in deep trouble for the next 15 years after Brexit. Cameron has a lot to answer for.

■ So David Cameron has resurfaced – something to do with a book he wants to sell, perhaps? Also, he has the nerve to tell us what we already know - that we’re being governed by hypocrites and idiots.

As long as we have multi-millionaires running the country, the ordinary people will never get a fair deal in life. Just remember the Bedroom Tax, benefit cuts and, not least the Tories reneging on the promise to keep the free TV license for the over- 75s. I, for one, am fed up with politicians lying to get into power and have lost faith in our political system. Victor Laidlaw St Leonards-on-Sea East Sussex

■ The most depressing element of extracts I’ve read from David Cameron’s almost apology for Brexit is that they clearly show us that Westminster is being run like the sixth form common room of an exclusive private school for privileged, out of touch, spoiled boys.

■ It’s unbelievable Cameron – who started this shambles then did a runner, is now targeting his old rivals. He claims Boris backed Leave to grab the Tory crown and says he and Gove behaved appallingly in the referendum campaign.

This sorry affair has dragged on for more than three years and is costing us a fortune, but the Tories are happy to give the money tree a shake when it suits them.

■ Now David Cameron has finally crawled out of his bolthole and turned on Boris, calling him a disgrace and blaming him for the Brexit mess. No, Cameron. You gave us Brexit and you are the disgrace. Stefan Badham, Portsmouth

■ Cameron, Johnson and Gove, it makes no difference. All are cut from the same cloth, all entitled, privileged posh boys intent on feathering their own nests while the country is deadlocked with Brexit and crippled by austerity. Time to get rid.
