QYesterday, while hosting a fondue party, a small amount of methylated spirit leaked on to our wooden dining table and has left a ring stain. What do you recommend? Shirley Jones, by email
Depends on the finish. If it’s a wax finish, take a clean cloth and dampen it with methyl alcohol and wipe it over the stain. If that fails, you might have to apply a burnishing paste, similar to T-Cut that you use to revive car paint, and work that over the stain.
AQWe suffer from a clicking noise in an extension wall built 20 years ago. We had it insulated recently and the roof was also replaced with less weighty slate. Any ideas would be gratefully received.

When the builder replaced the slate with a lighter weight slate he would have had to replace the guttering. I think what you’re hearing is the guttering expanding. It heats up and gets to a point where it can’t move any further and then you get clicking against the supporting brackets. It’s nothing to worry about but I agree it’s annoying. I think your guttering should have been cut slightly shorter to allow for more expansion.
