Art show for palace pets
Firm to cut prices as profits plunge
A BUCKINGHAM Palace art exhibition will show off royal animals, from the Queen’s corgis to a giraffe presented to George IV.
The show will look at animals including Queen Victoria’s dogs and horses in Trooping the Colour.
Works of art will range from the reign of George III to the present day.
It will be held during the summer opening of Buckingham Palace, when the public can tour the 19 state rooms, from July 18 to September 27 2020.
Boss Steve Rowe
MARKS & Spencer is going into battle with the discounters after its profits plummeted in the first six months of the year.
The firm aims to go head-to-head with the cheaper supermarkets, with hundreds of price reductions across its food range – targeting vegans, families and the health-conscious. Pre-tax profits fell by 17% to £176.5million, compared with the same period the previous year, with clothing and home wares the hardest hit. M&S blamed “poor availability of the most popular sizes and too much stock and markdown” on its clothing lines. Food profits saw a small increase of 0.9%. The retailer is trying to win back loyalty on the clothing side with the relaunch of its Per Una range, as well as bringing down prices.
CEO Steve Rowe said: “Our transformation plan is now running at a pace and scale not seen before at M&S.
“The food business is outperforming the market. In clothing and home, we are making up for lost time. We are still in the early stages but we are clear on the issues we need to fix.”
Finance expert Russ Mould, of AJ Bell, said: “The disappointments are piling up for Marks & Spencer like unsold sweaters and cardigans on its shelves.”
