Medics warn against seeing it as ‘risk-free’ alternativ­e to fags

MEDICS have warned of the dangers of vaping after it almost killed a teenager.

Ewan Fisher was 16 when he was rushed to A&E with respirator­y failure and put on life support.

And his doctors have said “we consider e-cigarettes as ‘much safer than tobacco’ at our peril”.

Ewan, from Nottingham, ditched smoking for vaping as he thought it was “healthier”. He got hypersensi­tivity pneumoniti­s – inflamed lungs from an allergic reaction to something inhaled.

Ewan was put on an exterior artificial lung, spending 35 days in hospital. Despite a spate of vaping-linked illnesses in the US, Public Health England says it is 95% less harmful than smoking.

But Dr Jayesh Mahendra Bhatt, who treated Ewan, said the

In a British Medical Journal report, Ewan’s doctors said: “There are two lessons. The first is consider a reaction to e-cigarettes in someone presenting with an atypical respirator­y illness. The second is we consider e-cigarettes as ‘much safer than tobacco’ at our peril.”
