SARA WALLIS

- SANTA FLAWED

wants to promote his book

BBC1, 7.30pm

HERE we have a bad Santa who has no budget for games consoles and just wants to promote his new book. Exploding crackers that are a death trap. A collapsing chimney. And a snowman whose head rolls off.

This is just par for the course for The Goes Wrong Show, which does exactly what it says on the tin.

A festive episode kicks off this new comedy series from the team behind The Play That Goes Wrong, which sold out at UK theatres.

It sees a fictional terrible theatre company put on a play, but anything that can go wrong does. A stocking falling into a fire and setting alight in the first scenes sets the tone for this lighthearted romp.

To begin at the beginning, the Cornley Drama Society are attempting to present the story of Santa and his elves, hoping to solve a little girl’s Christmas woes.

With her parents constantly fighting, her hopes are pinned on a magical toy machine, Mr Snowman or perhaps Santa?

But sadly there’s no Christmas cheer as one of the elves becomes trapped in the set, Santa indulges in a little too much Christmas sherry and a magical snowman is eaten alive.

Also, there are songs – but these don’t go as well as could be hoped.

This is a little bit like Mrs Brown’s Boys, with props going wrong, sets falling down and tongue-in-cheek bad acting.

But don’t be put off. It’s not slapstick and corny – it’s a farce that gathers pace and will leave you keen for more.
