HONOURS LIST PRIDE OF ENGLAND’S CRICKET WORLD CUP-WINNING HEROES

- FROM DEAN WILSON

EOIN MORGAN and three of his World Cup-winning cricket team have been awarded gongs in the New Year honours list.

Skipper Morgan leads the way with a CBE, while man of the match in the final Ben Stokes has been awarded an OBE.

Joe Root, England’s leading run-scorer at the tournament, and Jos Buttler, the vice-captain who claimed the matchwinning run out were both awarded MBEs for services to cricket.

Stokes said: “I’m hugely proud to be receiving this honour as I know the other lads are too, adding to what has been a great year.

“We don’t play for awards like these, but when they come along it is a sign that you’ve done something right as a team and that is what we did this summer.

“The World Cup win was such a special moment for us and we wouldn’t be in a position to receive awards like an OBE if it wasn’t for what we achieved together.

I only told my wife and my mum about it.

“So the news will come as a nice surprise to the rest of the family and our friends, and I guess I’ll have to buy a new suit now.”

World Cup-winning coach Trevor Bayliss was also honoured with an OBE while ECB chairman Colin Graves was awarded a CBE.

Morgan (below) said: “I’m very proud to have been awarded a CBE.

“Winning the World Cup has been a dream come true and the honours and awards that have come since that day at Lord’s mean a lot to everyone connected with the team.

The events of that day at Lord’s were the result of many years of hard work and dedication, and I see this honour – and the honours for my team-mates – as honours for the whole team, for everything they put into winning that tournament.”

There was also recognition for the former captain of the all-conquering West Indies teams of the 1970s and 1980s Clive Lloyd, who is knighted, while former England wicket keeper Alan Knott gets an MBE.

Trailblazers in women’s sport have been recognised with Sue Campbell, the FA’s director of women’s football, made a Dame.

Double Olympic taekwondo champion Jade Jones, Solheim Cup winning captain Catriona Matthew (both OBE), and England and Manchester City footballer Jill Scott (MBE) are also honoured.

England netball captain Serena Guthrie and goal shooter Joanne Harten have been made MBEs.
