Go... but expect no tax handouts

■ HARRY and Meghan cannot change who they are and they will always be the focus of attention from the public and the media. It would be impossible for them to live their lives as ordinary Mr and Mrs Windsor.

They also cannot expect to keep their royal privileges without accepting their share of responsibilities. They both speak the same language but are from different cultures – Harry brought up protected by the royal household and Meghan used to the flamboyant, Hollywood lifestyle.

A great deal of adjustment was expected from Meghan when she became a member of the Royal Family. Perhaps she cannot cope. Christine Hanks, Woking, Surrey

■ I have always thought Prince Harry was a good soul and a great ambassador for our country and his late mum, Princess Diana. However, if he and Meghan want to break away from royal life let them, but they must also forfeit Frogmore Cottage, pay for their own security and drop their titles. I feel sure this move has come about due to Meghan’s influence over Harry. I say good luck to them but they can’t, and shouldn’t, have their cake and eat it. Not in 2020. Heather Walker Grassington, North Yorks

■ I think having taken this brave decision, Harry and Meghan are going to be happy not to have to abide by old-fashioned, stuffy royal protocol. People blame Meghan but I reckon it’s Harry who’s had enough of being a royal. He had a hard time during his childhood with the loss of Diana and then has had to spend his whole life putting on a smile and being judged for every move.

He didn’t choose to be a royal – it must be exhausting when you just want a normal life. I wish Harry and Meghan all the best.

Tanya Drew, Westbury, Wilts

■ I am astounded by the disrespect Meghan and Harry have shown the Queen and Royal Family. What a ruthless couple – it seems their ambitions have no bounds. I think Meghan never had any intention of being junior to Kate. Her future is clearly set on a top job in the USA. To my mind she’s a devious and frighteningly clever operator.

Gill Fenner, North West London

■ The Royal Family does need to be modernised. The lesser royals don’t need extravagant weddings, pomp and ceremony and so Harry and Meghan are right to step back. We have Princes Charles, William and Kate’s children so there is no need for extended Royal Family. But will they court the limelight?

If not, all well and good. If they do, well shame on them.

Valerie Stead, Pontypridd Rhondda Cynon Taf

■ I do hope the latest development with Prince Harry and Meghan doesn’t cause any lasting rift within the Royal Family, especially with his brother Prince William. They were so close and nothing is worth causing a split between them. Mike George, Biggleswade, Beds

■ I think Meghan and Harry should be left to make their own decisions. I wonder if those criticising them have thought about the fact that Archie is half American.

Jan Hencher-Serafin Studley, Warks

■ I feel that if Prince Harry and Meghan no longer wish to carry out their royal duties then they should not expect the public to pay for their security.

Ed Foster, Derby
