Aguero grabs treble to beat Henry and Shearer records

- BY DAVE ARMITAGE

SERGIO AGUERO smashed his way into the record books – and it was all so three ‘n’ easy.

Aguero blasted a hat-trick to demolish Aston Villa and put himself at the top of all-time overseas scorers in the Premier League.

He went into the game needing one to draw level with Arsenal legend Thierry Henry on 175 but sailed past it as he put Villa to the sword.

And just for good measure he moved top of the Premier League hat-trick charts with his 12th treble to leapfrog Alan Shearer.

This demolition sees Manchester City go back above Leicester into second spot and helped cement Villa’s place in the bottom three.

Riyad Mahrez grabbed a double and Gabriel Jesus added one, but this was all about the man City boss Pep Guardiola describes as “irreplaceable”.

Villa looked a rather reluctant sideshow as City ripped them to pieces and quite what Pepe Reina must have thought looking on from the stands is anyone’s guess.

The former Liverpool keeper will join the Villans in a loan deal today and cannot have liked what he witnessed.

You could not see a way back for Villa once Mahrez had put City in front after just 18 minutes. By half-time it had become borderline embarrassing.

In simple terms, Dean Smith’s men just could not get out, and when they did manage a token journey in the direction of City’s goal, had not got anyone there to make the ball stick.

They have not g o t any forwards, yet

City showed their awesome strike power with the luxury of Raheem Sterling on the bench. Scary stuff.

And so, from pretty early on, it was clear it was going to be a long, hard slog of an afternoon with City dominating possession and Villa condemned to the role of a sparring partner penned in on the ropes.

When Mahrez shot them in front the only surprise was that it had not come even earlier. Mahrez raced through a ruck of defenders before powering a left-foot shot just inside the post. Poor Danny Drinkwater, his former Leicester title-winning team-mate, was making his debut for Villa against City. Who else?

Drinkwater’s only appearance for Burnley this season was against City and his last appearance for parent-club Chelsea was also against Guardiola’s men.

In the 24th minute, the midfielder was caught napping on the ball, got robbed by David Silva, who crossed for Mahrez to score.

Then Aguero equalled Henry’s record with City’s third, a swerving drive from just outside the box after Kevin De Bruyne had set him on his way.

In first-half stoppage time it was De Bruyne again. He sliced open the home defence with a wicked curling ball towards the far post, where Jesus steamed in to ram it home and send City in 4-0 up at the break.

Now it was merely a question of how many and shortly before the hour mark, City added a fifth – and it was Aguero again.

The Argentine ace danced his way through the home defence, taking out three defenders along the way, before picking his spot and thumping the ball home from eight yards.

He got his third in the 81st minute when he cashed in on a mistake by defender Kortney Hause and rifled the ball home once Mahrez had put him in.

Villa managed to land one blow in the final minute when Anwar El Ghazi converted a penalty after midfielder Trezeguet had been tripped by Ilkay Gundogan.
