Beano fan gets comic every week for 53 years

A COMIC fan aged 61 has been buying the Beano every week since he was eight.

Part-time builder and care worker Paul Cooper has collected thousands of editions of the classic comic featuring Dennis the Menace and Gnasher over the 53 years.

His obsession drives wife Yvonne “mad” and they are running out of space at home.

He said: “My wife sits there on her mobile phone over the breakfast table and I read The Beano.

“She’s right – men don’t grow up. We are just big boys.”

The Beano was first published in 1938 and naughty schoolboy Dennis was introduced in 1951.

A PAIR of pelicans seem chuffed to get top billing on an informatio­n sign in the park.

The birds are two of six which now live in St James’s Park, Central London, after the wildfowl species was introduced in 1664 as a gift from Russia to King Charles II.

New Zealander Harri Boyd, 33, who took the photograph, said: “It was hilarious, extremely cute, and needed to be shared with the world.”

He is now planning a holiday to visit the home of publisher DC Thomson in Dundee. He said: “There are aspects of The Beano where the humour is Paul Cooper definitely aimed at adults rather than children – and certainly people of my age. “I wouldn’t win any awards for my knowledge of the Beano on Mastermind. It’s just something I’ve enjoyed and still collect.” Beano Studios’ Mike Stirling said: “We’re very grateful Paul has been a loyal reader for so many years.
