Queen’s duty is to protect monarchy

- FIONA PARKER Edited by

■ Prince Harry has had to learn a vital lesson during the crisis precipitated by his and Meghan’s desire to quit their roles as fulltime royals – that the monarchy and its survival is more important than any individual member.

Our monarchy goes back more than 1,000 years and forms a major part of our constitution. The Queen has understood the immense burden of responsibility placed upon her when she became sovereign, and has done a brilliant job serving her country.

The role of the Royal Family is to support the monarch, whoever that might be. Clearly, Harry and Meghan found this wasn’t enough for them.

■ It may be that Prince Harry is a bit, or indeed a lot, like his late mother Princess Diana in that he has found it extremely difficult to adapt to the demands and traditions of royal protocol.

It must be very pressurised with your every word and nuance being observed and recorded for the whole world to see.

It’s very easy for people up and down the country to pass judgement on Harry and Meghan, along with other celebrities in the news. But no one has all the answers and the most that any of us can do is to try our best in this sometimes difficult life. It would be a much better world if we all had a bit more empathy for others.

■ Prince Harry is not the first and certainly won’t be the last young man to be besotted by a beautiful woman who, in this case, is strongwilled and well acquainted with being in the public eye and making her own decisions.

Meghan’s marriage to a leading member of our Royal Family was bound to create problems.

The similarity to the Duke of Windsor and Wallis Simpson is uncanny but it’s to be hoped that it will pan out rather more satisfactorily. Only time will tell. Margaret Mellor

■ Am I the only one to spot the difference between Kate and Meghan? Kate smiles, shakes hands and accepts flowers while Meghan rolls her sleeves up and gets to work with the Grenfell Tower ladies and helps women returning to work dress the part for job interviews. I can understand why Harry married Meghan – she is like his mother in many ways. Keith Bell, Bradford, West Yorks

■ So, Harry and Meghan will no longer use their HRH titles and will pay back the £2.4million it cost to revamp Frogmore Cottage following their decision to put fame and fortune before duty.

But it seems we will still have to pay their mammoth security bill – and the millions they will still receive from Prince Charles ultimately comes from us anyway.

■ I think that Prince Harry and Meghan should let it go instead of him insisting they could have done more for the Royal Family had they been allowed to.

The simple truth is that it seems Harry and Meghan wanted things on their terms but the Queen and Prince Charles prevented them from having it all their own way. Ken Pennington Stalybridge, Cheshire

■ After reading about the royal crises over the years in your special pullout ( January 16), all the scriptwriters from all the soap operas which have ever been written come nowhere near to the intrigue and scandal which has been created by members of our Royal Family. Bob Courton, Bourne, Lincs
