‘HAVE FAITH IN FUTURE’

Campbell’s early strike gives Stoke huge lift

WEST BROM really blew their big chance to go four points in front at the top of the table.

The Baggies had been handed a ‘free hit’ after Leeds lost on Saturday, but ended up getting nothing thanks to a Tyrese Campbell goal after just nine minutes.

Take nothing away from Stoke – this was a welcome and well-earned victory, but it came at a cost to Albion, who have now gone six games without a win in the Championship.

They still remain top but really are making hard work of it, and it could have been even worse because Matheus Pereira should have been sent off midway through the first half for flooring the Potters’ Joe Allen with his elbow.

It certainly didn’t take long for things to start going wrong for the table-toppers – less than two minutes to be exact.

Ham was making his comeback after a month out with a back injury, but he collapsed in a heap after just 90 seconds and took no further part.

Then the Baggies found themselves a goal behind when a superb ball from Nick Powell totally split their back line.

The midfielder’s raking ball down the right exposed the home side as Tom Ince raced onto it. Ahmed Hegazi tried to clear, but he only managed to kick it into Ince and help him on his way.

The midfielder found Campbell at the far post and the striker bundled the ball home.

In the 24th minute, Campbell limped out with a hamstring injury, but still West Brom struggled to get a proper grip.

And in the 35th minute, they really had a stroke of luck when they should have been reduced to 10 men when Pereira had that rush of blood to the head.

He clearly threw an arm at Allen, which poleaxed the Wales international, and he can count himself lucky there was no VAR to deliver the verdict his moment of madness deserved.

SKIPPER Alex Mowatt has urged his Barnsley team-mates to keep believing that they can stay up this season.

The troubled Tykes are desperate to bounce back when they clash with Preston tonight at Oakwell after losing 1-0 at Bristol City on Saturday.

Mowatt (above) said: “We need to keep believing in ourselves as I know we can start climbing the table again.

“The performances have been there for us but we just need to keep plugging away.

“The best thing about this league is that when you lose, you have the chance to make it right a couple of days later.”

Injured talisman striker Cauley Woodrow remains sidelined.
