ALBRIGHTON BELIEVES FOXES WILL WIN SILVERWARE AND CAN’T WAIT FOR CLASH WITH HIS OLD CLUB

-

AS a boy Marc Albrighton cheered on Aston Villa from the stands at Villa Park in a League Cup semi final.

Now he’s going back there to crush their dreams of a return to Wembley and help Leicester win some more silverware.

Boyhood Villa fan Albrighton, who played over 100 games for the club, helped the Foxes see off Brentford in the last-ever FA Cup game at Griffin Park

It was only his seventh start of the season. But he is targeting another outing in tomorrow night’s Carabao Cup semi-final, second leg, against the team where he made his name.

Albrighton (right) said:

“We’ve said in the dressing room it’s probably our biggest game of the season.

“It’s going to be emotionally and physically draining so we need to get ourselves recovered and prepared well to get the result. It will be a special night for me. I’ve witnessed League Cup semi-finals at Villa Park.

“I’ve been there as a supporter – and as a player not so many years ago.

“We’re all expecting a very hostile atmosphere and it’s something we’re looking forward to.

“I was there with my dad in the Holte End when we played Tranmere in a League Cup semi in 1994. The atmosphere was incredible.

“I went to watch the final as well against Leeds at Wembley in 1996. We won 3-0. Good memories for me as a fan and I know what it will be like there.” Many wrote Leicester off as one-hit wonders after their miracle Premier League title win under Claudio Ranieri.

But this team looks like it’s going places under Brendan Rodgers and swept Championship high-fliers Brentford aside despite making nine changes.

With a 14-point gap over fifth-placed Manchester United, Foxes fans sang “We’re on our way to the Champions League” as their team booked a place in the fifth round thanks to Kelechi Iheanacho’s winner.

And they are one win away from Wembley after a 1-1 draw with Villa in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi.

Albrighton said: “There’s no reason why we can’t reach the Champions League and win a trophy. We’ve got a good enough squad.

“This is what you play the game for. We’re in the semifinal. Our target is to win it. If we lose to Villa we’ve not reached our target.

“We’ve got a few players that were part of that titlewinning squad and know that every game we need to be at our best. That season we were.

“We’ve had a couple of blips since then but we’re putting together a squad and building something special now. We’re still in the early stages of that.

“Man City and Liverpool are three or four years into their project. We’re 18 months into ours. There’s a long way to go but hopefully we can achieve something.”
