Hunt for thugs who hurled flares
JAILED Calvert Batchelor
A THUG who had a loaded gun stashed in his car tried to rip out a policeman’s tongue and held his head underwater in a brook.
Calvert Batchelor, 37, fled after being pulled over because his VW Golf was missing a number plate.
Traffic officers saw the illegally-converted Glock blank-firing pistol and gave chase, Wolverhampton crown court heard.
PC Paul Newman cornered Batchelor but he launched a “grotesque” assault and it took another officer to help arrest him.
Batchelor, of Newtown, Birmingham, admitted wounding and firearms offences and was jailed for nine years, four months.
Chief Insp Rachel Joyce said PC Newman suffered “nasty facial injuries” in July and was still off work.
