Donald Trump’s a nation’s justice
■ What a total fiasco the Trump impeachment was!
Since the Republicans hold a majority in the Senate they could block witnesses from giving testimony, and then found him innocent of all charges.
Before this event I judged that the US justice system was one of the better ones in the world – but now it seems their President is actually above the law.
The danger is if he is re-elected by voters in November he will prove to be even more outrageous, knowing that as long as he has a majority in the Senate he will get away with breaking rules.
If Boris Johnson continues with his present behaviour, ie excluding journalists who are likely to criticise him, we could also slide to this dreadfully low level of truth and honesty that we see in the US. Terry Marriott Waterlooville, Hants
■ The inevitable vote by the Republican Senate to clear Trump shows the world one thing: anything goes for President Trump from now on.
Party politics in the USA is more important than justice or the integrity of its president – at least, as long as he’s a Republican. What a mess. Keith Longmore, Norwich
■ They cried impeachment even before he was sworn in. They tried to make him weaker but they just made him stronger. He will walk it in 2020, this is just the start. Robert Thornbury County Armagh
■ Trump’s acquittal isn’t surprising really when it’s the equivalent of having your own family as the jury and no witnesses allowed.
The only reason a trial was brought was because Democrats control Congress.
And the only reason he was acquitted was because Republicans control the Senate.
Guilty or not guilty actually means nothing in these proceedings. What a farce.
Mary Oliver, Cornwall
■ I’ve just watched Donald Trump give his address to the nation speech. Does anyone else think that if he wins another presidential term he will try to change things so he can stand for a third term in 2024? Because he clearly thinks no one else is intelligent enough to do the job.
R.S. Hardwick, Shropshire
■ Justice, logic and fairness have prevailed and the partisan Left have once again been shown for what they are – antidemocratic and bitter people that shift their moral compasses daily so they can pretend they are on the moral high ground. They have been desperate to impeach Trump from the start.
What the Democrats have done is disgraceful and I’m sure that, just like Labour back in December, their party will live to regret their childish behaviour.
Angie Smith, South Wales
■ Donald Trump will stop at nothing to buy everyone and anything that gets in his way. Tell a lie long enough and people will start to believe it.
Not only have the pro-Trump Republican senators shamed every decent American, but they have failed the rest of the world.
History will prove what a terrible mistake they made in not allowing the truth to be aired.
Abraham Lincoln must be spinning in his grave to see what is happening on Trump’s watch. Reg Barrett, Essex
