HARRY’S GAME IS TOO CLASSY FOR STUNNED ROVERS
HARRY NEWMAN’S delightful first-half double underlined his precocious talent and sent Leeds marching on to their first win of the Super League season.
The teenage centre scored twice and also provided a fine assist for Ash Handley as Richard Agar’s men erased the pain of their opening-day horror show against Hull FC.
This nine-try masterclass left the Headingley faithful roaring their approval as Hull KR were taken to the cleaners.
In Huddersfield-born Newman, who turns 20 next week, Leeds have a player whose star continues to rise.
He made his first-team debut three years ago and, having represented England at academy level, appears a decent bet to make the senior grade sooner rather than later.
Newman’s first came when full-back Jack Walker drove at the heart of the Rovers defence before finding Luke Briscoe on the right flank. The winger showed intelligence to find Newman with a neat inside pass which sent the teenager diving over.
A second home try arrived when Luke Gale’s superb crossfield kick found Briscoe, who outjumped Kane Linnett and palmed the ball to Newman to complete his brace. Back-rower Cameron Smith (left) pounced from close range and Gale, who kicked eight goals, bossed proceedings at scrum-half. Shambolic Rovers hit back through Greg Minikin before the break.
But further scores from Walker, Handley – sent clear by Newman on halfway – and Smith again underlined Leeds’ superiority.
Jordan Abdull grabbed a second Rovers try but Rhinos’ Konrad Hurrell, James Donaldson and Richie Myler got in on the act late on.
