SAMARITAN MURDERED

Killer raped ‘caring, loving’ Megan, 18

A MAN who raped and murdered a “good Samaritan” teenager after she offered him a place to stay overnight has been jailed for life.

Joseph Trevor, 19, was due to stand trial yesterday, but changed his plea to admit killing Megan Newton.

Megan, 18, took pity on former school “acquaintance” Trevor after meeting him at a taxi rank during a night out.

But he betrayed the youth football coach’s “typical act of kindness” by carrying out a brutal double rape at her flat.

Trevor, high on drink and drugs, strangled his host before grabbing a knife and stabbing her nine times in the back.

A statement by Megan’s dad Michael Baggaley was read out in court. He said: “She was so excited about finishing college and talked about going to America to study. I am never going to see her grow and blossom into the amazing woman she was going to be.

“My life has been ripped apart. She was an amazing caring, kind, loving, funny young lady.”

Jailing Trevor, the son of an ex-police officer, for a minimum of 21 years, judge Michael Chambers said it was a “brutal and sustained attack conducted in the most callous way in her own home”.

He added: “She tragically must have suffered and suffered greatly and suffered for some significant time.”

Trevor had been on a boozy night out with friends in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffs, last April. He was seen taking the drug ketamine and arrested by police. After being released, he made his way to the taxi rank. Prosecutor Adrian Keeling told Stafford crown court: “He told his friends he did not want to go home due to the intoxicated state he had got himself into. His parents would be mad.

“It was Megan who offered him a bed for the night. It was a typical act of kindness, but one that would cost her her life.”

At her flat in Stoke, he twice raped her, strangled her with his hands and stabbed her.

Megan had dreamed of becoming a physiotherapist or sports therapist and the first in her family to go to university.

Trevor, of Trentham, Stoke, was put on the sex offender register for life.
