Hitting a high note

THE BRIT AWARDS 2020 ITV, 8pm

- SARA WALLIS

NO bruises on Lewis Capaldi’s ego tonight – he’s definitely someone we love as he leads the Brits this year with four nominations.

London rapper Dave also has four nominations, with both him and Scottish singer-songwriter Capaldi up for new artist of the year, best male solo artist, best album and best song.

The last 12 months have been a whirlwind for both artists, with Dave’s album Psychodrama winning the Mercury Prize, Capaldi topping the singles chart for seven weeks with Someone You Loved and both playing hit sets at Glastonbury.

It promises to be a well-fought battle at this year’s 40th edition of the biggest night on the British music calendar.

Jack Whitehall hosts the ceremony, live from London’s O2, with a starstudded line-up.

We’ve been promised performances from Capaldi, Mabel, Harry Styles, Stormzy, Billie Eilish and Celeste with a few more surprises along the way.

In the main categories, you’ll see Harry Styles, Michael Kiwanuka and Stormzy up against Dave and Capaldi for both best album and best male artist. Aitch, Mabel and Sam Fender battle the two top dogs for best new artist. International stars up for gongs include Ariana Grande, Lizzo, Bruce Springsteen and Billie Eilish.

Charli XCX, FKA Twigs, Freya Ridings, Mabel and Mahalia are all nominated for best female artist, while Bastille, Bring Me The Horizon, Coldplay, D-Block Europe and Foals compete for Best Group.

Brits producers teased: “This year we’ll be letting the artists fully take the reins to create unique performances, guaranteeing memorable and showstopping moments.”
