IT’S A BRIDGE TWO VAR

Chelsea fury as a pair of goals are ruled out

HARRY MAGUIRE headed Manchester United to within three points of fourth place on another night for the VAR and the furious.

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard was frustrated that the Video Assistant Referee ruled out two goals for his side (above) – including what would have been a 76th-minute equaliser from substitute Olivier Giroud because his foot was offside.

Another Blues substitute, Kurt Zouma, had earlier had a strike overturned because of a push from Cesar Azpilicueta on Brandon

Williams. Lampard (left) – whose side have now won only one of their last six games – were also angry that Maguire was not sent off after appearing to kick out at striker Michy Batshuayi in the 21st minute.

The United players wore black armbands in tribute to the legendary Reds keeper Harry Gregg, whose death had been announced yesterday morning. Anthony Martial opened the scoring for United with a glancing header on the stroke of half-time.

Maguire powered in a header from a Bruno Fernandes corner on a night when the Reds’ new signing impressed. Loan signing Odion Ighalo also made a late appearance after his deadline day signing from Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua.

Batshuayi missed two first-half chances before being replaced by Giroud in the second half. Mason Mount also hit the post late on.

Defeat left Chelsea just one point ahead of fifth-placed Tottenham after a shocking run of four games without a win, defeats against Bournemouth and Southampton and their failure to win at Brighton.
