Warning over ‘400% rise’ in SIM fraud
TARGETED Mobile SIM card
FRAUD cases involving mobile SIM cards have rocketed by 400% in five years, watchdogs say.
Pressure group Action Fraud is calling for more action against a scam known as SIM-swap.
Criminals obtain personal data through social engineering – such as fake emails, texts and calls.
They then contact the mobile network and trick it into transferring the victim’s phone number on to a SIM card they have.
The crooks get all calls and texts to the phone, including passwords for personal accounts.
Consumer group Which? says victims lose thousands and called on banking and telecoms industries “to take a more collaborative approach to tackling SIM-swap fraud”.
