CARE Jenny McGee and Luis Pitarma

THE family of one of the nurses credited with saving Boris Johnson’s life have hailed her professionalism.

Praise poured in for Jenny McGee and fellow nurse Luis Pitarma, from Portugal, who the PM said “stood by my bedside for 48 hours when things could have gone either way”.

Speaking from her native New Zealand, Jenny’s mother Caroline McGee said: “It makes us feel exceptionally proud obviously.

“But she has told us these things over the years and it doesn’t matter what patient she is looking after, this is what she does.”

Jenny’s dad Mike McGee said: “So once we’d heard that Boris Johnson had gone into intensive care it was obvious that at some stage Jenny would possibly run into him and be giving him the same level of care that she would have given anybody else the week before or next week and we’re really proud of her.”

The pair are among 12 medics Mr Johnson gave special thanks to after being discharged from London’s St Thomas’ Hospital following his recovery from Covid-19.

DEDICATED Porter Swadesh Sidhar

A MAN who worked for the NHS for 40 years died of Covid-19 in the hospital he spent his whole career.

Swadesh Sidhar, 70, had retired as a porter at badly-hit Croydon University Hospital, South London.

Despite suffering asthma and diabetes, his family say that he was perfectly healthy.

He was well-known and liked at the hospital and was being cared for by doctors and nurses he had worked with for decades.

His niece Sonia said: “He dedicated himself completely to that hospital and now he has passed away there too, without any goodbyes.”

ON these pages are the brave NHS workers who have lost their lives to the coronavirus.

When the nation needed their dedication, kindness and expertise, they answered that call and, in doing so, paid the highest of prices.

These were not just the very best of the health service. They were loved ones, mothers, fathers, sons and daughters.

And some of them might be alive today if they had been provided with the proper kit.

For all the wild promises by ministers there is still a woeful shortage of personal protection

GP equipment. Stories from those working in our hospitals, clinics and care homes should shame the Government.

Doctors and nurses are putting their lives in danger every day because they do not have enough masks, gowns, gloves and goggles.

Many are having to pay for their own equipment or are having to

NURSE re-use existing kit. Others have resorted to fashioning make-shift gowns from bin liners.

Instead of taking responsibility for this shameful situation, Health Secretary Matt Hancock insinuated that NHS staff were being too profligate in using what he described as “precious” equipment.

Essential PPE should not be a luxury that needs rationing. It should be a basic right of anyone working in our health service at this crucial time.

This is especially the case when so few frontline workers have been tested so far.

Boris Johnson did not stint in his praise for the NHS workers who saved his life. The National Health
