HOPE Professor Seager
AN experiment showing bacteria can live in 100% hydrogen means finding alien life is more likely than ever, says a scientist.
A study published in Nature Astronomy found E. coli bacteria and yeast, a more complex organism, were both able to survive and grow in pure hydrogen environments.
Astrophysicist Professor Sara Seager says the James Webb Space Telescope, due to launch next March, may detect changes to the atmospheres of distant planets harbouring life.
Prof Seager, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said: “Microorganisms like E. coli produce a great variety of gases such as nitrous oxide, ammonia and sulfide. These could build up in sizeable abundances and become detectable.”
