Souey: There’ll be casualties once game is back

- BY LEWIS WINTER

LIVERPOOL legend Graeme Souness believes “there will be a casualty” when football returns.

The Premier League are discussing with relevant authorities how to play the remaining games of the 2019-20 campaign.

A June resumption has been pencilled in, pending a reduction in lockdown restrictions. Matches are set to be played behind closed doors at neutral venues, like Aston Villa’s

But Souness (above) says he does not envy the authorities who have to make the decisions.

“I’d hate to be a decision-maker in this because whenever we get playing, it’s going to be very difficult,” said former Kop hero Souness on Sky Sports’ The Football Show. “If we go back next month, there will be a casualty. If we go back in two months’ time, there will be another casualty.

“If we go back in three months, same again. We have to manage it until there is a vaccine.

“We’re going to have to manage it and, if we’re determined to get back to playing football again, just take it on the chin. “There will be times when we’re taking two strides forward and we’re taking three back, that’s how I see it.” Souness, who managed Liverpool, Southampton, Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle, says a major problem is getting every club to back one plan.

“It’s a very difficult time for the decision-makers,” he said. “How do you get all these clubs to agree? I’m not sure if that’s going to happen.

“I think it will be very, very difficult because everyone has to look after their own house.”
