MADNESS OF THE MALL

I was in Fort Southwick on D-Day and transmitted messages to and from the beaches. I went to London for VE Day with my friend Betty, aiming to walk down the Mall to Buckingham Palace.

But most of London was determined to do the same thing. We met a human tide and were hugged and kissed by soldiers, sailors and airmen! People were delirious with joy.
