Two-thirds of voters want Cummings to quit over trip

TWO-thirds of voters believe Dominic Cummings should resign or be sacked by Boris Johnson amid continuing anger over his lockdown-flouting trip to Durham.

And more than half of Tory supporters want Mr Cummings gone, an Opinium survey found, heaping further pressure on the Prime Minister to axe his chief aide.

Some 68% of all respondent­s said Mr Cummings should quit, with 66% saying Mr Johnson should remove him from Downing Street.

England’s deputy chief medical officer, Prof Jonathan Van-Tam, weighed into the dispute at the weekend, saying lockdown rules were easy to follow.

He told the No10 briefing: “The rules are clear and have always been clear. In my opinion they are for the benefit of all. In my opinion they apply to all.”

Police have told GOINGS How Mr Cummings they we broke story will take no further action over his visit to Durham, but said he may have breached the law on a day-trip to Barnard Castle.

Witnesses in the town claim to have spotted Mr Cummings walking outside shops and on a woodland trail beside the River Tees.

The alleged sightings appear to contradict his explanatio­n of his movements there last month, when he said he and his wife sat by the river on the outskirts of the town for about 15 minutes.

Rosalind Evans, 60, a retired council worker, provided police with a “lengthy” statement last week.

She said she spotted Mr Cummings in Market Place — a partially cobbled street of shops.

Alan Gowland, 62, a retired GlaxoSmith­Kline engineer, claims to have walked past him on a narrow path by the River Tees.

He told the Sunday Times: “I am 100% certain it was him.’

“His wife and child were behind him and he was walking ahead.”

The PM has publicly backed Mr Cummings, saying that he is satisfied with his explanatio­n.
