Dortmund’s 6-1 thrashing of Paderborn. The shirt references unarmed African-American Floyd, 46, who died after being handcuffed and pinned to the ground by a police officer’s knee last week in Minneapolis.

Sancho, 20, who is poised to join Manchester United this summer in a £120million deal, was booked by referee Daniel Siebert for taking his shirt off to reveal the message. His team-mate Achraf Hakimi (below) also revealed the message after he scored the club’s fourth goal.

Borussia Monchengladbach’s Marcus Thuram took a knee in tribute to the movement after scoring in yesterday’s win against Union Berlin, while Liverpool striker Rhian Brewster spoke out against racism in a series of tweets yesterday.

There have been protests and civil unrest across America and further afield after Floyd’s death. Over the weekend, protestors marched in the streets of major cities across the world, including London and Cardiff, calling for justice.

Brewster, 20, who has previously spoken out several times about his own experiences of racism, posted an emotional message on Twitter saying: “This is way deeper than just pointing out who’s staying quiet and who’s speaking up.

“Unfortunately for us black/brown people etc, this is a real life and everyday occurrence in so many different ways. For years and generations we’ve been screaming out for change and to be heard, yet the pain continues.

“This goes beyond just #JusticeForGeorgeFloyd, we need justice for us as human beings. We don’t want special privilege. A level playing field is all we have been crying for, forever. Hear us. #BlackLivesMatter.”

The hat-trick for Sancho was the first by an English player in one of the other top five European leagues since Brian Stein for Caen against Cannes in Ligue 1 – exactly 31 years ago.
