QPR chief left stunned and fuming over EFL’s June 20 restart date and calls for Government to step in now
QUEENS PARK RANGERS have called on the Government to intervene in the row over Project Restart – insisting it is “appalling” there was no vote on the return date.
QPR are among several clubs angered and stunned by the EFL’s decision to suddenly announce a restart of the Championship on June 20 without, they claim, consultation – and have called into question the League’s leadership.
Mirror Sport can reveal that three Championship clubs were opposed to a restart with one of them, Hull City, openly against any return.
Now QPR have voiced their fury after the EFL’s statement late on Sunday night.
Three players from fellow Championship outfit Charlton, meanwhile, said they would not be returning to play any time soon.
QPR chief executive Lee Hoos has called for the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport to get involved and sort out the perceived lack of communication between the Premier League and the EFL.
Hoos said: “I’m absolutely stunned by this announcement, as is our director of football Les Ferdinand and our manager Mark Warburton.
“I am absolutely appalled. There was no vote for the restart date. Incredibly, there has been no consultation with clubs nor with the Championship doctors’ working group.
“We are vehemently opposed to this schedule. The players haven’t even returned to full-contact training and they are now expected to play at a competitive level in three weeks. I’m not a lone voice on this matter.
“We have to integrate the Premier
League and the EFL. Each side needs to know what the other is doing. It needs Government intervention.
“People say the EFL have been waiting for the Premier League to do something, and then they react.
“We have not had any initiative or leadership from the EFL.
“Maybe we need an umbrella body covering both leagues.
“The system is broken. The symptoms had been there for a long time and now they have come out.
“Some say, ‘Let’s just get it finished’. But where is integrity of the league then?
“I was absolutely stunned when I read what was being proposed. They had given us 40 minutes’ notice before it was released.”
But one executive said: “They should just get on with it. We have been gearing up to June 20 for weeks. We are ready to go.”
Charlton manager Lee
Bowyer, however, revealed that three players –
Lyle Taylor,
Chris Solly and David
Davis – said they will not play.
“It’s tough for me as a manager,” said Bowyer. “But we’ve got players who do want to play. We move on.”
An EFL spokesman said: “We made the decision to announce the proposed date following direct approaches from Championship clubs seeking clarity.”
