UNITY IS STRENGTH

LIVERPOOL TAKE A KNEE IN FIGHT AGAINST RACISM

Floyd, who was unarmed, died when his neck was knelt on by a police officer for more than eight minutes. Derek Chauvin, the arresting officer, was subsequent­ly charged with murder.

Chelsea also released a statement in support of the movement, as did Manchester United’s Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford, Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mbappe, as well as six-time Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton.

Chelsea said in a statement: “Chelsea FC stands together with George Floyd and all victims in the fight against discrimina­tion, brutality and injustice.

“As a club, we are committed to being a part of the solution, and we are joining our voice to all those calling for fairness, equality and meaningful change. Enough is enough. Together we are stronger.”

In an instagram post, Pogba said: “I felt anger, pity, hatred indignatio­n, pain, sadness. Sadness for George and for all black people who suffer from racism every day!

“This has to stop, once and for all. Not tomorrow or the next day, it has to end today.”

LIVERPOOL players sent a powerful anti-racism message by taking a knee to show their support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

As they returned to training at Anfield for the first time ahead of the season’s restart, all 29 players took part in a photograph to support protesters after the death of George Floyd (right). Following the message from England star Jadon Sancho (left) squad members each issued a social media message declaring: “Unity is strength”, followed by
