On the weekend’s telly

Eurovision Song Contest: The Story Of Fire Saga, Netflix ★★★★

Celebrity Snoop Dogs, C4 ★★

Two new projects caught my eye over the weekend. The one which sounded like it had the capacity to be awful turned out to be wonderful and the one that looked great on paper stank the house out on screen. Netflix’s TV film about a quirky Icelandic duo’s dream of Eurovision glory was all kinds of fab.

If I was being picky, there were a few too many flabby moments where someone should’ve had a quiet word with writer/producer/star Will Ferrell.

However, Rachel McAdams was irresistible throughout, the closing song Husavik was Oscar-worthy and the cameos from real Eurovision acts were brilliantly done.

To top it all, Pierce Brosnan didn’t even attempt to sing.

As for Celebrity Snoop Dogs? I’m afraid the title was the best thing about this canine version of Through The Keyhole. The main problem was apparent the minute the production team strapped a Go-Pro camera to the back of the first celeb dog, Charlie.

As soon as he lifted his head, he obscured the lens. And when he had his head down all we could see was the floor or the bottom of kitchen units.

The dogs were cute though. It was also nice to peep inside the luxury homes of comedian Kevin Bridges and Strictly judge Shirley Ballas.

Sadly, it was light on celebrity insights – unless you wanted to know the name of the rescue home from which Shirley adopted Charlie – Barks And Bitches.

Funnily enough, that’s also a fairly good description of what Shirley’s pal Craig Revel Horwood does on Strictly.
