nent threat. In a statement released through an attorney, the McCloskeys said they wanted to “set the record straight”.

It said: “The peaceful protesters were not the subject of scorn or disdain by the McCloskeys.

“The actions of violence, destruction of property and acts of threatening aggression by a few individuals co-mingling with the peaceful protesters gave rise to trepidation and fear of imminent and grave [sic].”

The statement added that they had “acted lawfully on their property” and their actions were born “solely of fear and apprehension”.

Some 300 protesters had marched to demand Mayor Krewson quit after she revealed in a news briefing on Friday the names and addresses of residents wanting to stop funds for local police. Thousands have called for forces to have budgets slashed

After initially refusing to say sorry, Mayor Krewson apologised. She said: “I would like to apologise for identifying individuals who presented letters to me as I was answering a routine question during one of my updates earlier today. While this is public information, I did not intend to cause distress or harm.”

But an online petition calling for her to resign has now topped 45,000,

and the American Civil Liberties Union has criticised her actions.

The ACLU’s Sara Baker said: “It is shocking for Mayor Krewson to broadcast the addresses of those who dare to express a different viewpoint on an issue of public concern.

“It serves no apparent purpose beyond intimidation. We are stronger when we foster open dialogue. The chilling of debate should bother everyone, whether they agree or disagree with the mayor on this issue.”

Meanwhile, there was fury after riot police stormed a vigil for a black man who died days after police

detained him and paramedics injected him with ketamine.

Officers used pepper spray and batons at the memorial for Elijah McClain in Aurora, Colorado, on Saturday. The vigil came after the Colorado Attorney General’s Office agreed to probe his death.

The 23-year-old was walking home from a shop in August 2019 when someone called police, saying he “looked sketchy” and was wearing a ski mask and waving his arms.

Police arrived and after struggling to handcuff him they brought him to the ground, put him in a chokehold and called paramedics – who injected him with ketamine.

He had a heart attack on the way to hospital and died days later, after being declared brain-dead.

MENTION Samuel DuBose’s name in America and in the same breath Tamir Rice, Walter Scott, Michael Brown, Eric Garner and George Floyd will be spoken.

All African-Americans needlessly killed by white police officers.

Five years ago, Mr DuBose’s death left the US shocked but unsurprised. His “senseless” killing threatened the same protests that erupted across the US following Mr Floyd’s death in Minneapolis last month. The music producer was driving to his Cincinnati home in July 2015, when a routine traffic stop saw his life brutally cut short.

Two minutes after Mr DuBose was pulled over, the unarmed 43-year-old had his face “blown off” by a white police officer as he sat in his car. His killer – rookie cop Ray Tensing – who claimed Mr DuBose had tried to drive off, was said by a prosecutor to have “purposefully killed” him, adding, “this is without question a murder”.

Yet after two trials and body cam evidence, the now ex-officer, 30, is a free man. Now Mr Dubose’s daughter Raegan Brooks has delivered a powerful message to the people of the UK pleading for peaceful protest.

She said: “We shall forever mourn the loss of people like my father, like George Floyd, but it is up to every one of us to play our part as civil rights activists, as the fight for racial justice is far from over yet.

“It’s really just beginning.

“But there is no place for the violence we have seen. My dad wouldn’t want that. Mr Floyd’s family have said he wouldn’t.”

Raegan, 23, also said she blames President Trump for increasing racial division. She told the Mirror: “The sooner we vote his racist ass out the White House, the quicker the States will be united again.
