Animal lover Ricky is leading campaign
RICKY Gervais is leading calls to ban the importation of young puppies after the death of Love Island stars Tommy Fury and Molly-Mae Hague’s dog.
A Government e-petition has already attracted 15,000 signatures in under 48 hours, including those of many figures from across the worlds of showbiz and politics.
Dog lover and animal rights campaigner Ricky, who has 14.3 million social media followers, is among the most high-profile names to back the petition.
Others include Dragons’ Den tycoon Deborah Meaden, ex-Corrie actress Shobna Gulati, singer Nicole Appleton, Downton Abbey’s Peter Egan and Katie Price. The petition
SUPPORT Singer Nicole and Corrie actress Shobna follows the death of Tommy and Molly-Mae’s pomeranian Mr Chai just days after he was imported by a Russian breeder.
As it already has more than 10,000 signatures, the Government must respond to it. If it gets 100,000 it will be considered for debate by MPs.
Great British Bake Off winner Candice Brown, another supporter, said: “Having lost a dog at a young age who had clearly been over-bred I know the heartbreak surrounding this issue.” Green MP Caroline
Lucas, Tory Sir Roger Gale, Labour’s Kerry McCarthy and the SNP’s Lisa Cameron all back the petition too.
Lucy Parkinson, 27, from Preston, Lancs, who started it, said: “It would be brilliant to make a change. I’ve got a puppy myself and I couldn’t imagine what it would have been like putting it through that journey.”
Last year comedy legend Ricky Gervais was among those who backed the Mirror’s campaign for Lucy’s Law, a crackdown on unlicensed puppy and kitten breeding.
Vet Marc Abraham, who was behind Lucy’s Law, said: “It’s a brilliant grass roots campaign.” The petition states: “Plenty of dogs from UK breeders & rescues need homes. Transporting young pups long distances is often stressful, before being sold for ridiculous prices. Government must ban this unethical activity.”
