FALDO: NO RYDER CUP UNTIL 2021

LEGEND SEES BIG EVENT DELAY

- BY NEIL McLEMAN

SIR NICK FALDO has claimed the Ryder Cup will be cancelled this year because of Covid-19.

The six-time Major winner blurted out the worst kept secret in golf after Dustin Johnson won the Travelers Championship – the third US winner in three events since the return of the PGA Tour.

Nine of the world’s top-10 in Connecticut were Americans with Rory McIlroy the top European down in tied 11th place.

Faldo (top), who was commentating at the time, said: “Unfortunately, with the Ryder Cup being cancelled, being moved on a year, it would have been good timing for America right now.” Back in London, Sky Sports’ golf presenter Sarah Stirk quickly added: “That has not been confirmed. I think we are expecting an announcement next week.” The news will see another rejig of the golfing calendar with the Ryder Cup delayed to 2021 and the Presidents Cup shunted back to 2022. Top players like McIlroy and Brooks Koepka have been strongly against playing the matchplay showdown without crowds – with the American even saying he could lead a boycott if that decision was made. August’s US PGA in San Francisco will now be staged behind closed doors while no construction work has started at this September’s Ryder Cup venue at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin.

Johnson won his 21st PGA Tour title and moved up to world No.3 with a one-shot win at TPC River Highlands.

But McIlroy (left) said he will take a break after his third flop since the return of the PGA. “I’m not sure when I will play again,” said the world No.1.

“Probably Memorial (July 16), maybe the one before. But the way I’m feeling right now, I feel like a couple of weeks off. Decision-making was terrible the last few days.”
