IAN HYLAND on last night’s telly

- Celebrity Gogglebox, C4 ★★★★

One of things I’ve found most surprising about lockdown are the huge ratings that are being pulled in by Channel 4’s Gogglebox.

Pretty much all we’ve been doing for the past three months is sitting on our sofas watching

TV. You’d think the last thing anyone would want right now would be to watch other people doing it as well.

Gogglebox and its celebrity offshoot have hit six million viewers a week though – just below Corrie, on a par with Emmerdale and way ahead of EastEnders.

It’s so popular Piers Morgan has even started copying it on Good Morning Britain.

Just yesterday, he was yelling his head off at the screen as he watched Dan Walker interview Matt Hancock on BBC Breakfast.

Next he’ll be showing up in a tiger onesie and filling his desk with platefuls of Mini

Rolls and French Fancies.

Just as long as Piers doesn’t elbow his way on to the real thing. There are too many celebs on there already. If Rishi

Sunak were to extend the furlough scheme just for this show, that would be fine by me.

I’d be perfectly happy if Channel 4 limited it to the most entertaining couples – Shaun Ryder and Bez, Emilia Fox and her mum Joanne, Babatunde Aleshe and Mo Gilligan, and Gyles Brandreth and Maureen Lipman.

“What about Rylan Clark-Neal and his brilliant mum, Linda?”, I hear you cry. Don’t worry.

You’d think the last thing we’d want is to see people watching telly

They’d be getting an entire spin-off episode to themselves.

And if there was any justice, the biggest-selling toy this

Christmas would be a Linda doll that says “Load of old b ***** ks” when you squeeze its tummy.

NB: There’s still time, Mattel.
