It’s been a difficult lockdown for most of Britain’s pubs, cafés and restaurants. But welcome relief came last week when the Prime Minister announced these hospitality businesses could reopen from July 4, as long as they have measures in place to ensure the safety of customers.
We chatted to Jamie Woodhall, technical and innovation manager at Initial Washroom Hygiene, for his tips on how businesses can create safer washrooms once they reopen.

There has been anxiety surrounding the use of public washrooms so it’s important to demonstrate to customers how committed you are to preventing cross contamination.
This starts outside the washroom by displaying signs and reminders about hand hygiene and social Ƚ¸Ò³¦¸ á½È±ÈÌĮ c È ½È¦¸ ½àȦ¸Ì Õ̦¸ Ò½Èç ½ÕÒÌ ½ ½ÕÈ Ì¦¸ÌĮ Ì Ò¤ç È ½·AEճ̽Èç ½È ÒÈà³ á á¸Ò Ò½ ³ Ò½ ½È ÕÒ¦Õ³ ÌÒç³ÌĮ N³Ì ¤à ¸³ ÕÌ Ò½ ½¸Ò ¦¸ aeÌÌ ½ ĆĊįąąą ·Ì±Ì Ò½ Ò¤ Ƚ¸Ò ³¦¸Į c È Ì½³ÕÒ³ç ҤȦ³³ á¦Ò¤ Ò¤ ÈÌAE½¸Ì Ò½ ½ÕÈ Õ̦¸ÌÌ È½· ½ÕÈ ÕÌÒ½·ÈÌį Ì á³³ Ì ³È¦Ò¦Ì ¸ ̤¦½¸ ¦¸³Õ¸ÈÌ á¤½ ÌÕAEAE½ÈÒ Ò¤ ȸį ¦¸³Õ¦¸ distancing. Creating hand sanitiser stations throughout your business is another way to do this.

With about 80% of all infections transmitted by hand, the simple act of thoroughly washing them can significantly reduce the risk of cross contamination. Providing highquality soap, hand drying facilities and sanitiser is therefore a must.
Surface disinfectants are another important tool. These enable people to wipe down shared touchpoints such as toilet seats, baby change stations and door handles. Disinfectant dispensers or antibacterial wipes should also be provided in every cubicle, as well as near the wash basin.

Keep up the good work and stay in touch. ventilation and air care is a vital consideration. Hand dryers should have high efficiency HEPA filters, which trap airborne microbes during filtration. Air steriliser units provide a method of removing germs from the air and reassure users that the air being circulated is clean.

Toilet paper dispensers can limit people from touching paper they don’t use. Flushing mechanisms, soap or sanitiser dispensers and taps can also be automated or sensor activated, reducing the need for physical contact.
However, eliminating all shared touchpoints is near impossible – so encourage people to thoroughly wash and dry their hands, and provide hand sanitiser just after the exit of the washroom to give users a final opportunity to sanitise before returning to their tables. »
