Cummings now running country

- Edited by FIONA PARKER

■ It appears Britain has adopted the politics of America with Boris Johnson morphing into Donald Trump.

He backed Housing Minister Robert Jenrick when he should have been axed over the cash-forfavours row.

He backed Dominic Cummings when he should have been sacked for breaching lockdown.

He has sat on the results of the report into alleged Russian interference in UK democracy – and now he is replacing top Whitehall official Sir Mark Sedwill.

Johnson is a disgrace and so is this Government. Now he’s been pictured doing push-ups. What next?

Can we expect to see him riding a horse down Downing Street in an effort to seem as macho as Putin? Mary Pester, Saltash, Cornwall

■ We did not elect Cummings so what is he doing acting as if he is Boris Johnson’s puppet master? He seems to be taking over the Government – and this is despite the public outrage at his flagrant disregard for the lockdown. Now he is apparently planning a purge of the civil service, no doubt to restructure it with his inner cabal.

Who will be next to go, I wonder?

■ Regarding the ousting of Sir Mark Sedwill, I am seriously concerned as to who is in charge in this Government.

Are any members who do not agree with Dominic Cummings likely to be dismissed? Is Boris Johnson’s Government to be run by a nonelected adviser who decided to break the lockdown rules to suit himself?

Boris needs to get a grip on the situation.

■ As Sir Mark Sedwill becomes the latest victim of Dominic Cummings establishment purge, I can’t help wondering how long will it be before the UK has its own equivalent of Trump’s former security adviser John Bolton.

Bolton has published an account of all shenaningans behind the scenes at the White House.

I reckon a similar book about the goings-on at Number 10 would certainly cause a few ripples – and would be one I would most definitely want to read.

Stuart Magrath, Wigan

■ Since when has an unelected government adviser had the power, in effect, to dismiss a senior civil servant?

This appears to be what has happened with Sir Mark Sedwill’s announcement that he is to stand down from his dual role as Cabinet Secretary and National Security Adviser.

I worry this country is sleepwalking into a dictatorship under Johnson and Cummings. Come on, Britain, wake up.

G Crawford, Gillingham, Kent

■ The ousting of Sir Mark Sedwill has come about because this rightwing Government is determined to avoid scrutiny at all costs.

They don’t want order – rather they want to destroy anything or anyone that stands in the way of their warped ideology.

Michael Elias, Carmarthen

■ So the boss in Number 10 apparently wanted Sir Mark Sedwill ousted… and Boris Johnson agreed to it.
