Retire then pass on job

-

■ Something the Government could do which would help older and younger people alike – and wouldn’t have much of a financial impact – is to lower the retirement age.

Many older people find coping with having to work long into their 60s difficult and exhausting but they have to carry on while they wait for their state pension.

Reducing the retirement age would release a lot of jobs which would filter down to younger people and help the unemployment figures.

Rather than paying unemployment support the country would be paying pensions to older people, many of whom want to retire. Gill Matthews Taunton, Somerset

■ So, travellers from dozens of countries can enter the UK without going into quarantine. But what if they have travelled to countries outside the quarantine zone and then onto the UK?

Once widespread travel resumes there is no way we can contain the virus.

Things are easing too quickly for my liking.

■ I see Trump has been dealt a further blow after the Supreme Court ruled he must hand his tax returns over to criminal investigators (Mirror, July 10). Surely, by now this atrocious individual’s chances of winning a second term are all but finished?

I certainly hope so.
