DELTA DRINK ‘WAS GIVEN DOPING OK‘
UK SPORT yesterday denied putting athletes’ welfare at risk amid claims British Olympians were given an experimental substance ahead of London 2012.
A total of 91 elite athletes across eight Olympic sports were reportedly provided with an energy drink called DeltaG – and told there were no guarantees it did not cause physical side-effects, nor was it certain to be cleared by anti-doping authorities.
But UK Sport yesterday insisted it had consulted with World and UK AntiDoping chiefs before making the drink available to ensure it was safe and complied with guidelines.
“UK Anti-Doping confirmed in writing, after seeking clarification from the World Anti-Doping Agency, that WADA had ‘no reason to consider such substances as banned under the 2011 List of Prohibited Substances and Methods’,” the agency said.
