OVER Greyhound stadium
THE historic Belle Vue greyhound racing stadium in Manchester is to permanently close, its operators blaming the “negative effect” of the lockdown.
The stadium hosted the UK’s first oval track race in 1926 and has also been used for speedway and stock car racing.
The operators, the Arena Racing Company, said all staff would be made redundant as there was “no longer a business case to support the ongoing operation of the stadium”.
Mark Spincer, ARC racing division director, said: “The closure has been an incredibly difficult one to make, especially given the history associated with the stadium.”
Plans for housing on the site were approved by councillors last year.
