Dover’s future on cliff edge
DOVER ATHLETIC could become the first professional side in England to go bust because of Covid-19.
The National League club, formed in 1983, are close to seven months without a game and are struggling financially. Their players turned down a new pay deal this week and are now all available on free transfers, with chairman Jim Parmenter (above) fearing the Whites will fold this month.
He said: “It is clear income will be greatly reduced in the coming season.
“Players and staff were asked to accept a 20 per cent short-term reduction in salary to assist the club.
“The management accepted the proposal, however, the players have not agreed and are now available for free transfer. If a solution or further investment cannot be found by the end of August it is likely we will be forced to cease trading.”
