SMALLING OUT TO END UNITED SAGA

- BY JEREMY CROSS

CHRIS SMALLING will return to Manchester United this week and tell them he wants to quit Old Trafford.

Smalling (below) has spent this season on loan with Roma – but the terms of the deal have expired, leaving him with no choice but to go back to United.

The agreement only covered the Serie A season and it means he will miss the final stages of the Europa League this month with the Italian outfit.

But Smalling has loved his time in the Italian capital and is keen to secure a permanent move to Roma.

He knows his chances of getting back into the United side are limited and will tell Old Trafford bosses to agree a fee with their Italian counterparts.

Smalling has a contract at United that runs until 2022 and it is understood United want in the region of £15million for the former England centre-back.

Roma paid a £2.7m loan fee for this season and Smalling has been a regular for the Giallorossi, starting 29 Serie A fixtures and seven in the Europa League.
