Time to reform outdated Lords

-

■ So, Boris Johnson has filled the ever growing House of Lords with his friends, family and fellow Brexiteers (Mirror, August 1). How ironic since the Brexiteers’ war cry was against the elite of the EU while this elite receives £305 for each day they attend.

The UK parliament is now the second biggest legislative body in the world after China which has a population is 1.44 billion compared to Britain’s 67 million. And all this comes at a time when more than 46,000 people have died from this dreadful virus, the economy is on a precipice and millions of workers are facing redundancy, increasing poverty and poor health.

A disgraceful decision – and timing – from a PM who seems to live in a fantasy world of his own. David Bonomi, Bristol

■ For Boris Johnson to appoint 36 new members to the House of Lords, especially his brother Jo, at a likely cost of £1.1m a year is a disgrace at a time when the country is facing a serious economic crisis. Surely, the time has come now to get rid of the bloated upper chamber which is a drain on taxpayers’ hard-earned money? The system should be abolished.

■ What a joke that our PM is filling the House of Lords with his cronies, while Philip May, Theresa May’s husband, is awarded a knighthood for “political service”. How can you compare this nonentity with Captain Sir Tom Moore who raised £33m for the NHS?

Talk about jobs for the boys and bolstering the House of Lords... meanwhile, the over-75 now have to pay for a well-earned TV licence. Disgraceful.

Brian Edwards, Colchester, Essex

■ Like many, I am infuriated by Boris Johnson’s announcement of 36 new peerages, but those calling for the abolition of the House of Lords should think again. At this moment the Lords is the only counter-balance to the excesses of this calamitous Tory Government. Andy Slater

■ This isn’t the right time to appoint new members to the House of Lords at a cost of £305 every time they attend. I can understand the need for checks and balances on our Government but the Lords needs to be reformed and replaced by an elected body. I wish I had a job which paid £300plus for signing in. I’m a pensioner and look after my disabled wife but I was refused carers’ allowance because I’m in receipt of a pension. David Searle, via email

■ Boris Johnson’s popularity has surely suffered yet another hammer blow following the publication of his ‘jobs for the boys’ list of new peers. Why do we need more members of the House of Lords in a building already bursting at the seams with old cronies?

Paul Marston, Walsall, West Mids

■ Here we go again the abuse of the honours system with Boris Johnson stuffing the House of Lords with political friends and family. Johnson’s brother Jo is enobled even though he wouldn’t back him over Brexit. The whole system makes me sick.

Tony Howard, Gtr Manchester
