Green power makes 10% of electricity
Spy planes to keep watch on migrant boat trips
SOLAR and wind power generated a 10th of the world’s electricity in the first half of this year, a record for the technologies,
At the same time, coal power had its biggest halfyear fall in generation since at least 1990, according to analysis by climate think-tank Ember.
But it warned the shift is not on track to help limit temperature rises to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels.
Dave Jones, of Ember, warned: “Coal generation needs to fall by 13% every year this decade.
“The fact that, during a global pandemic, coal generation has still only fallen by 8% shows how far off-track we still are.”
Migrants arrive
SPY planes are tracking the wave of small migrant boats heading to England.
A Shadow R1 intelligencegathering plane will be joined by a Poseidon MRA1, which keeps an eye on enemy submarines and other hostile vessels. Both warplanes scan huge areas of sea.
Officials said they will take over from an RAF Atlas A-440M plane which has been conducting surveillance over the Channel.
Group Captain Chris Layden,
Station Commander RAF Lossiemouth, said: “The Home Office has requested support and the RAF has responded quickly with the deployment of a Poseidon MRA1.
“It has significant range and endurance.”

if it’s that dangerous on the land. I see tragedies every week. There are so many children who should be in school. It’s far worse now than it has been for a long time.”
Labour’s Shadow Home Secretary Nick Thomas-Symonds said: “The approach being pursued by Government is lacking in competence and compassion, resulting in thousands of people risking their lives. Criminal gangs continue to profit.
“The situation has been exacerbated by Government rhetoric, when they should have been concentrating on [ finding] a viable, humanitarian, practical solution.”
Meanwhile, the Home Office has made a formal request for military assistance from the Royal Navy to help tackle Channel crossings.
But the Mayor of Calais, Natacha Bouchart, branded it a “declaration of maritime war” and said the UK Government must take responsibility for the crisis. It came as more migrants arrived in the UK yesterday, for the ninth day in a row.
Seventy-one arrived in six boats, bringing the total to cross the Channel this year to 4,468. The RAF yesterday said it sent a maritime patrol aircraft to help support border control in the Channel.
