AARON, YOUR BEST FORM OF ATTACK IS DEFENCE

Neville: Wan-Bissaka can’t be like Alexander-Arnold so should focus on what he’s best at... keeping clean sheets

- BY NEIL McLEMAN

GARY NEVILLE has claimed “old fashioned” Aaron Wan-Bissaka will never be an attacking threat like Trent AlexanderArnold – and the £50million right-back should focus on stopping goals not making them.

The Manchester United star has yet to score in 77 Premier League appearances and has provided only seven assists during his top-flight career.

By contrast his rival for the England No.2 shirt AlexanderArnold provided 13 assists for Liverpool just last season – second only to Kevin De Bruyne in the top flight.

But before Wan- Bissaka faces his former club Crystal Palace at Old Trafford today, Neville insisted Manchester United paid big money for a top-class defender and must play to his strengths.

“Aaron Wan-Bissaka should focus on his defending and become a brilliant Manchester United full-back defensively, who keeps clean sheets,” said the Sky Sports analyst.

“That’s No.1, and he should focus on that.

“The idea that you are going to make Aaron Wan-Bissaka into Trent Alexander-Arnold or Kyle Walker is never going to happen. So let’s concentrate on how he can support upport Manchest e r Uni ted a winning team. There is more than one way to win a football match.

“The idea that because Tr e n t Alexander-Arnold and

Kyle Walker are two of the most outstanding attacking acking full-backs in Europe means that Manchester United have to have one of the most outstanding attacking full backs in Europe is not the case. I’ve seen Branislav Ivanovic, Cesar Azpilicueta be successful suc in the Premier League over the past five, 10 years and they have been very different full-backs to the ones I ’ ve mentioned. “Manchester United hav have invested £ 50m in Wan- B Bissaka ( right), so rather than try to change him they have to work with what he does. “It’s a bit of an old-fashioned approach because nowadays fullbacks are expected to be wingers, score goals, set up goals, take freebecoming kicks and penalties. This is a little bit of a throwback. I don’t think we have to say he needs to be something different.

“He’s an outstanding defensive right-back – he could potentially be part of a back three – he’s a better defender than some of the attacking full-backs, work on that.”

Neville ( left) acknowledged Wan-Bissaka, 22, could add to his offensive game by working on his passing and overlapping but needs helps from his United team-mates.

“I have seen him get left isolated on the ball in what’s a big pitch at

Old Trafford,” added the eight-time Premier League winner. “I always had three options, whether it was Beckham, Keane or Yorke, or whether it would be Carrick, Ronaldo and Rooney.

“I knew where they were and I was feeding it into them. He just needs to polish up serving into the forward players to start the attack, that’s the only thing I would ask of him.”

Sky Sports is the home of the Premier League with more live matches than any other broadcaster.
