WE’RE BANG ON TRAC

Gwion says Ipswich can keep that winning feeling

- BY NEIL GOULDING

GWION EDWARDS is brimming with confidence that in-form Ipswich can last the distance.

The Welsh winger bagged a brace as the Tractor Boys thumped strugglers Blackpool to go top of the table.

Despite being one of only two unbeaten teams left in League One, the 27-year-old stressed that promotion-chasers must not let complacency creep in.

Ipswich blew up after a strong start last term. Edwards said: “I’m buzzing, but we can’t get too ahead of ourselves.

“No one is getting carried away, but it’s good to have that team spirit. If we carry on improving I see no reason why we can’t be up there.”

Edwards now has four goals in five league games and misfiring Blackpool were no match for the rampant visitors, especially in the first half, as they ran riot.

Skipper Luke Chambers fired Ipswich ahead with a wonder volley in the 16th minute, his first league goal for nearly 14 months. Edwards cut inside and rifled a right-foot strike into the bottom left corner nine minutes before the break. On the stroke of half-time Keshi Anderson lost the ball in his own half, Teddy Bishop snatched it and raced forward to score a fine solo goal.

Striker Gary Madine pulled a goal back from close range after the visitors failed to deal with a CJ Hamilton cross from right.

But Chambers picked out Edwards with a superb crossfield ball and he blasted home to kill off the contest with 10 minutes left. Edwards added: “We are there to be shot at now, but that’s the challenge.

“We’ll have to adapt and I’m sure the gaffer will have a plan in place for every opponent.” His boss Lambert said: “We were incredible. The goals we scored were brilliant.”

The Seasiders have lost four of their five league fixtures, but manager Neil Critchley said: “We have to stick together and remain positive. We have to keep working hard and believe in what we do.”
