ENDING HIS WAIT SENDS AARON HEAD OVER HEELS

-

AARON WILDIG celebrated a career first after setting Morecambe on course for the top of the table.

The Shrimps midfielder’s second goal in three games (above) helped move Derek Adams’ side two points clear of the chasing pack with a third successive league win – and it was a moment to remember for the 28-year-old.

Wildig said: “I think it was the first header I’ve scored in my career although it wasn’t the best of headers.

It’s about time. I was having a little whinge because I thought I should have scored with a couple of headers last week.

“I was pleased to get an assist as well because that’s what I’ve got to do playing the position I do.

“I thought I could score every time I got forward.

“It was a great result and gives us a good platform to kick on. But I thought we could have scored five or six.”

Oldham’s Conor McAleny cancelled out Wildig’s 42nd-minute opener, but Alex Kenyon and Cole Stockton put the game beyond the Latics’ reach before McAleny grabbed his second goal of the game late on.

Defeat leaves Oldham at the foot of the table with just one point from their opening five games, and manager Harry Kewell is desperate to bring in new faces before the EFL transfer window shuts.

“I’ve still got a week or so in which to try to improve the squad, so we’ll do that this week and see where we are,” said Kewell.

“It’s tough, and it’s a tough situation, but if you keep conceding easy goals, this is what happens.

“I’ve got talented players here, but maybe they just need to be a little more street smart.”
