Businesses in the city, believed to have Europe’s third-highest Covid-19 hospital admission rate, fear the curbs could continue into the New Year.

John Hughes of Liverpool Pubwatch said: “I can see the fear in people’s eyes. We need financial support. And it’s not just the pubs, it’s the economy that goes alongside it – the taxi drivers, hairdresse­rs, nail bars, clothes shops.”

Staff and customers in the city’s pubs fell silent as they watched Boris Johnson’s announceme­nt.

Jeanette, 58, who runs The Saddle Inn in the city centre, said: “I worry we won’t survive if this goes on for six months. I feel as though pubs are being picked on. We’ve done everything we were asked – hand sanitisers, track and trace, masks, table service. What more are we supposed to do?”

Customer Dave Harwood, 74, said: “I can’t see why they’re leaving restaurant­s open but not the pubs.” Steve Etheringto­n, 45, said: “This is a joke.”

Tom McGiveron, 58, backed the temporary closure of the city’s pubs and clubs to fight the virus, saying: “Some people have been going wild. They think they’re not going to catch it but they can.” Bear Hudson, 45, also supported the measures, saying: “It has to be done.”
