Hands off our buns

Taking a bite from someone else’s burger is the worst food faux pas

NICKING chips is no small fry but, of all the food crimes, being a hamburglar is the worst.

In a survey of 2,000 adults, taking a bite of someone else’s burger was voted the biggest dinner time faux pas, followed by chip theft, and not ordering yourself a pudding then snaffling someone else’s.

The poll by pie brand Pukka revealed nearly two- thirds of the country suffers from “food share fear” but one in five of us will just smile politely if our companion tucks into our meal as well. The quiz also found Stoke- on-Trent folk were the most tolerant when it came to food stealing from their plates – with Brummies least likely to put up with it. Rachel Cranston, head of marketing at Pukka said:

“We can all relate to getting frustrated when someone steals a chip or an extra slice of pizza without asking first.

“In fact, the research shows well over half the nation dreads sharing their meal.”

The sentiment was best summed up in an episode of TV show Friends, when Joey’s date Sarah took fries from his plate. Joey, played by Matt LeBlanc, was fuming after she ordered a salad but then grabbed his chips. It launched his catchphrase, “Joey doesn’t share food”. And the poll found more than twothirds of us agree – you should always order your own sides and puds. However, one in 20 did confess to being a rude foodie – sneaking bits from others while guarding their own grub. Other dining shockers include eating from someone’s plate when they pop to the loo, and taking a big handful of crisps. And if you have your own chips, never dunk them in your pal’s ketchup.
