Herd immunity fear after man gets reinfected
A MAN has been infected with coronavirus for a second time casting doubt on whether herd immunity is possible.
The case of the 25-year-old, the first confirmed reinfection in the US, has been published in the respected Lancet journal.
Experts say it could be a rare exceptional case or the first of many, which would hamper efforts to develop a working vaccine.
The unnamed man from Washoe County, Nevada, is the fifth person in the world to have a second infection.
Worryingly the man was infected twice in two months and the second bout left him requiring oxygen.
But Prof Brendan Wren, of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, said: “Given the 40 million cases these small examples should not deter efforts to develop vaccines.”
