OAP parents’ bail extended over son’s 1992 murder

-

THE elderly parents arrested on suspicion of murdering their son 28 years ago were released pending further investigation yesterday.

Steven Clark, 23, vanished after going into a public toilet while his mother went to the ladies.

Parents Doris, 81, and Charles, 78, were arrested following a cold case review. They arrived at Kirkleatham Police station in Redcar, North Yorks, at 10am to answer police bail.

Charles, a former police officer, said when they emerged an hour later: “We’ve been released and have to come back on December 13. We cannot say any more.”

Cleveland Police appealed for information. Last month, they said a new witness reported seeing Steven “on the way home” just after the time his mum said he had gone missing on December 28, 1992, on Saltburn promenade, North Yorks. The sighting was in nearby Marske-by-the-Sea between 3-4pm, near the family’s £230,000 home. No body was ever found.

Det Chief Insp Shaun Page said: “I now believe that Steven was still alive on December 28, just minutes from his home address.” DCI Page said extensive inquiries had been carried out at the house, including excavation of the back garden.

Steven had been left disabled by a childhood car accident, walked with a limp, and had been unable to find work, but police said he was happy at the time and had job interviews lined up.

Confirming the couple’s arrest last month, Doris told the Mirror: “I really can’t believe what is going on, it is impossible to explain.”
